Plant-Based (or Whey) Chocolate Protein Powder – I used a mix of Sprout Living Chocolate Maca and Dymatize Plant protein powder Dymatize ISO is a good options for the Whey.
Unflavored Protein Powder to replace some of the flour. Quest Nutrition Multi-purpose here.
Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – or a regular all purpose flour
1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Substitute – I use Lakanto, to keep this recipe sugar free; (code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here too)
Some Stevia Sweetener
Almond Milk or regular milk
Baking Soda
Runny Almond Butter or Tahini (no butter or oil to keep this recipe low fat) I recommend American Dream Nut Butter Caramel Crunch Cappuccino Almond Butter here; Its lower fat and higher protein. The link or code HAYLSKITCHEN gives you a discount too.
Tips for Chocolate Kefir Brownie Recipe with Protein Powder
These protein powder sweet potato brownies are super easy to make, but here’s some tips to get it perfect every time!
Use Creamy Almond Butter or Tahini so that it mixes well into the batter
Don’t over-mix the batter! Make sure you gently fold the dry mix into the wet to combine them. If you over-mix it, the protein powder will make the fudgy kefir brownie bars tough, dense and gummy.
Taste the batter and see if you need some extra sweetener. I’d recommend using stevia powder to maintain the consistency of the batter and have sugar free and healthy kefir chocolate brownies.
Don’t over-bake the brownies or they might get tough; Remove when the tester/knife comes out mostly dry. Underbaking a little is okay.
How to store Kefir Protein Brownies?
This kefir protein brownie recipe keeps at room temperaturefor 1-2 days or in the fridge for a week in an airtight container.
To freeze healthy kefir brownies, individually wrap in plastic wrap and place in freezer-safe zipper bags or air tight container; They should keep for 2-3 months.
Alternatives for Healthy Chocolate Kefir Brownie Bars:
For the perfect healthy Kefir brownie bars, I would highly suggest using the ingredients and brands I recommended. I do have some alternatives you can try though:
Whole Wheat Pastry Flour: All purpose flour or 1:1 Gluten Free Baking Flour, in the same amount by weight; not cups.
Unflavored Protein Powder: 30g more Flour, but also reduce milk to ¼ cup (60ml)
Chocolate flavored Kefir: Vanilla or plain kefir, but also add an extra 1 tablespoon cocoa powder and some sweetener.
AlmondMilk: Any other milk
1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Replacement: Regular confectioners sugar or coconut sugar (this won’t be sugar free though, and also higher in calories)
Almond Butter: Tahini, Cashew Butter or any nut or seed butter.
