Ingredient Substitutes

Creating garlic mayo sauce at home is a breeze with just a few simple ingredients. Here are some alternatives to customise it to your taste preferences!

Yoghurt

We tend to use natural yoghurt when we make our garlic mayo, but we have also used Greek yoghurt.

Greek Yoghurt is thicker, higher in fat and has a slightly tangier flavour.

It is a personal preference which one you use.

Mayonnaise

When making garlic mayo sauce at home, it is important to use good-quality mayonnaise. Look for thick mayonnaise made with olive or avocado oil, which will give you the best flavour and texture.

If you want to make your own homemade mayonnaise for the recipe, that is also an option!

Garlic

For a tasty and creamy garlic mayo sauce, try adding garlic puree to your mayonnaise and yoghurt. The puree is easy to blend in and will give the sauce a wonderful flavour whilst staying smooth.

If you don’t have garlic puree on hand, you can use minced or crushed fresh garlic instead, or mush up some roasted garlic cloves for an extra special dip.

You could use garlic powder instead of garlic, a great way to add the same flavour without peeling and mincing the cloves. Garlic powder has a more concentrated flavour than fresh garlic, so start with only a small amount and slowly build up to more.

Lemon

Fresh lemon juice in garlic mayo can add a bright, tartness to the garlic mayonnaise. The lemon juice helps to balance out the richness of the mayonnaise, giving it an overall more balanced taste.

It also adds a bit of acidity that contrasts nicely with the garlic. When making garlic mayo, it’s best to use freshly squeezed lemon juice, as this will give you the most intense and flavorful result.

Adjust the amount of lemon juice according to taste, as too much can make it overly sour.

Mint

Mint Jelly is sweet and gives this garlic sauce a delicious fresh and sweet twang. You can use mint sauce instead which is mint in vinegar.

But you may want less lemon juice and add some sugar or sweetener into the sauce to counteract the sourness.

Alternatively, you could add freshly chopped mint, you may want to add sugar for extra sweetness.

Seasoning

You can also season with a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Instructions

Put everything in a bowl and stir or whisk. Add extra garlic, lemon, or mint jelly to your desired taste. That’s it—super easy!

How to make a homemade low-fat garlic sauce

If you want a garlic sauce with fewer calories and fat, you can substitute the full-fat natural Greek yogurt with 0% fat (or low-fat) yogurt.

The same with mayonnaise; opt for light or lighter than light mayo! Use fresh mint instead of mint jelly.

Yes, garlic mayonnaise can be frozen and still remain safe to eat. However, the texture may not be the same after thawing, as it has a delicate consistency that is easily disrupted by freezing and thawing.
