Orange Wellness Smoothie:
I created this Orange Wellness Smoothie to fight summer colds, but it can be used to fight colds all year round and boost immunity. Last week, my two year old son had a cold, and usually when he gets sick it travels around our house. This time though, I was determined to find a whole foods solution that would keep our immunity strong so we could stay healthy. It worked so I couldn’t wait to share it with all of you.
We drink smoothies regularly in our house like the Strawberry Banana Almond Smoothie as a way to pack in extra vitamins that aren’t present in gluten free grain alternatives, and since they’re so well received I knew this would be the easiest way to go. I looked for superfood vegetables and fruit that are rich in antioxidants and associated with boosting the immune system and fighting off free radicals. I was very impressed with the disease fighting antioxidants present in carrot, turmeric, orange, peach and ginger so I decided to use those ingredients.
To give you some background into why I chose these ingredients, here’s some information about each. In addition to antioxidants and immune boosting properties, peaches also contain calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese, phosphorous, zinc and copper. Turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and many believe it has medicinal properties. I was not able to find fresh turmeric at the store, so I used ground turmeric instead. Ginger also has anti-inflammatory properties and is associated with fighting infections and boosting the immune system. Oranges contains a wide range of vitamins and minerals, and just one medium orange has 130 percent of your Vitamin C needs for the day. Lastly, carrots are a great source of beta carotene and fiber, and are rich in Vitamins A, C, K, B8, potassium, iron, copper, folate, and manganese.
What surprised me is how the above mentioned superfoods are also associated with fighting cancer, heart disease and stroke, brain disorders, and improving gut health. I noticed drinking the Orange Wellness Smoothie also improved my digestive health with less bloating and overall more energy throughout the day. So, I’m going to be incorporating these superfoods more regularly in our diet.
The smoothie is adult and kid-friendly, so it’s perfect for all members of the family. The smoothie definitely has a kick from the fresh ginger, but my kids liked the “spiciness” as they called it. Here’s the simple recipe.
