Most whipped cottage cheese mousse recipes are made with 3 ingredients, sometimes 4 or 5.
They usually include unsweetened cocoa powder and maple syrup or honey to help blend and sweeten the cottage cheese.
But I had chocolate syrup in front of me and thought, well… this might just work 🙂
Cottage cheese chocolate mousse ingredients
I kid you not, you’ll only need two ingredients for this recipe:
You can also use milk chocolate powder instead of chocolate syrup, using the same amount. In this case, there’s no need to drain the cottage cheese. You might need to add a little milk or water to thin it out unless you’re using a high-speed blender.
How to make cottage cheese chocolate mousse
Step 1. Open the lid of the cottage cheese package and drain out all the liquid.
Extra liquid in the cottage cheese can make the mousse runny!
Step 2. Add the cottage cheese and chocolate syrup to your blender, food processor, or a tall narrow bowl if using a stick blender.
Step 3. Blend for 2 to 3 minutes, until the mixture is completely smooth. Use a spatula to scrape the sides to ensure every little bit gets whipped.
Step 4. Taste and add more chocolate syrup if you like it more chocolatey or sweeter.
Serve immediately or refrigerate for a few hours, or overnight to thicken it up.
Low-fat: Use reduced fat 2% cottage cheese. The mousse will be less rich, but equally delicious and with a pudding texture.
Low-sodium cottage cheese: If you think the cottage cheese taste is too strong, use low-sodium cottage cheese instead.
No cottage cheese? You can replace it with ricotta or mascarpone. You don’t even need to use a blender, just whisk it vigorously by hand (or use a hand mixer). It will be less thick than the cottage cheese version.
Cottage cheese mousse flavor ideas
Want to vary a bit? It’s easy to customize your cottage cheese mousse.
Switch up the flavor: Instead of chocolate syrup, use caramel or strawberry.
Melted chocolate: Melt 2 tablespoons of chocolate chips in the microwave, add it to the mousse and blend until smooth.
Peanut butter: I love peanut butter and chocolate so much, do you? Add a tablespoon of peanut butter after you finish blending the mousse and pulse it once just to swirl it in. Delicious!
Fresh berries: Blend the cottage cheese with ½ cup of berries like blueberries, raspberries, or sliced strawberries. You can still use syrups for flavor and sweetness, or simply add sugar or sweetener to taste.
Mix-ins and toppings to serve with
Extra chocolate syrup for drizzling
Cool Whip or whipped cream topping

Expert tips and FAQ
How to get cottage cheese mousse smooth
The secret for a creamy texture is blending the cottage cheese really well.
A high-speed blender or food processor works best, and scraping down the sides helps avoid any grainy bits.
If you can see pieces of cottage cheese, just keep blending, it will smooth out.
Does cottage cheese mousse taste like cottage cheese?
It depends on the brand you use. If the cottage cheese is mild and low in salt, you can’t tell it’s in there once it’s mixed with chocolate. But you’ll probably notice if the mousse is made with a more savory cottage cheese.
Can you make it ahead?
Yes, this chocolate cottage cheese mousse is great for meal prep. You can make it ahead and portion it into individual containers for an easy high-protein dessert or snack during the week.
The texture actually improves after chilling for a bit! It gets even creamier and thicker, like real chocolate mousse.
Storage and freezing
Refrigerator: Store the mousse in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days.
Give it a quick stir before serving if it thickens slightly. It stays creamy and smooth as long as it’s well covered.
Freezing: This mousse freezes surprisingly well. Freeze it in small containers, then let it thaw slightly before eating.
Straight from the freezer, it has a texture like chocolate ice cream, making it a great frozen treat!
