What is Froyo?
Froyo is an abbreviated way to say Frozen Yogurt! I remember when Frozen yogurt got popular in the 1990’s as a healthy alternative to Ice cream. Not only did Frozen yogurt shops start opening up every where, but frozen yogurt found it’s way into grocery store shelves as well.
It was, and still is a great alternative to Ice cream. Although low fat isn’t quite as trendy any more, low fat foods tend to have fewer calories. That is of course, as long as the fats aren’t being replaced by obscene amounts of sugar!
That’s where the Homemade froyo is helpful for someone trying to count calories and watch their health. Homemade frozen yogurt can be made without adding sugar, and just adding fruit.
The perfect homemade froyo texture
I’ve made a lot of frozen, low calorie treats in my career. What I’ve found is that yogurt tends to get icy after frozen, and loses it’s creamy texture.
That’s why with this recipe, I never froze the non fat Greek yogurt at all. Instead, I used frozen raspberries, and blended it together with creamy, non-frozen Greek yogurt! This gave me the creamy texture I was going for, without the froyo becoming icy.
What fruit can you use for homemade froyo?
While berries are the lowest calorie fruts, and I used raspberries for this froyo, you can also try adding any frozen fruit:
Blueberries
Strawberries
Mangoes (THIS ONE IS SO GOOD!)
Peaches
A tropical blend (peaches, pineapple, strawberries)
A berry blend (raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries)
And that’s it! Let me know if you try this froyo recipe and tag me in your pictures!!
